Molecular characteristic of Marek's disease virus genes and peptides

Abstract: Marek's disease virus (MDV) causes a common lymphomatous and neuropathic disease in domestic chickens and less commonly in turkeys and quails. It is a member of the alphaherpesviruses and is considered to be strongly celi associated. All MDV strains are divided into three serotypes; serotype l strains are divided into four pathotypes. Genetic materiał of MDV is a linear, double stranded DNA molecule that has a bouoyant density of 1,706 g/ml and molecular weight of 166-184 kbp. The genome structures consist of a long, unique region (UL.) and short unique region (US), each bounded by a terminal repeat sequence (TRL and TRS) and an internal repeate sequence (IRL andIRS). About 80 specific genes of MDV are identified. Most of them code for polypeptydes that have a crucial meaning for oncogenicity and pathogenicity. Three different groups of genes were determined on the basis of the character of their products. The first one includes genes associated with oncogenicity. The second one genes encoding glycoproteins and the third one connected with all other genes. Main oncogenes are products of: genes meq, pp38 and 132 bp sequence. Another important group of genes are those encoding glycoproteins like: Ig C, B, D, H, L, I and K that are basic inductors of cellular and humoral immuniry and mediate in penetration, fusion and spreading of the virus.
