Linear plasmids in bacteria
Abstract: Although the majority of bacterial plasmids exist as circular DNA molecules, plasmids naturally occurring in linear form have been discovered. There are two known types of linear plasmids: the first one contains plasmids with protein attached to the 51 end of the DNA molecule, and the other type consists of plasmids with covalently closed (hairpin-type) ends. Plasmids with attached terminal proteins belong to the group of invertrons. Usually they encode phenotypic traits advantageous for their bacterial host, e.g. degradation of xenobiotics, heavy metal resistance, production of antibiotics. The hairpin-type plasmids are common genetic elements in pathogenic
Borrelia spirochetes, in which they play an essential role in hiding from the host immunological response. This review deal with such topics as the structure of linear plasmids (including prophage/plasmid genomes), replication and stable inheritance mechanisms, phenotypic traits encoded by them. Some theories concerning their possible origin, evolution and genetic rearrangements are also
discussed.
