Secretion systems of Gram-negative bacteria - Type I and III
Abstract: This article is the second part of the review of the secretion pathways of Gram-negative bacteria. Secretion systems have been separated into two classes depending on the involvement of GSP (general secretory pathway) in the secretion of proteins (virulence factors) from the bacterial celi. This review (part II) describes the type I and the type III system, exemplified by the secretion of Yop proteins in Yersinia spp., used by pathogenic bacteria to deliver virulence factors into host cells. The export of substrates occurs directly across the inner and outer membranes and does not include periplasmic intermediates. The role of secretion machineries and secreted proteins in the virulence of pathogens is described.
