Molecular determinants of Listeria monocytogenes virulence
I. Listerial pathogenesis. Determinants of pathogenesis: surface proteins taking place in adhesion to the host cells
Abstract: Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular parasite. Virulent strains of
L. monocytogenes are able to invade, survive and multiply within both non-professional phagocytic host cells such as hepatocytes, epithelial cells and professional phagocytes like macrophages. Host cell infection begins with the internalization of the bacteria by a process similar to phagocytosis. Several bacterial gene products have been suggested to have roles in the early stage of pathogenicity of
L. monocytogenes. Many secreted polypeptides, such as listeriolysin O, phospholipase C, proteases, siderophores and toxins are necessary for full activity to cause disease by
L. monocytogenes. However, in the early stages of microbial infection proteins like internalins, p60 and
p104 proteins play an important role in virulence of Listeria monocytogenes. Presented work demonstrates the role of these proteins and molecular mechanisms of early stages of pathogenesis caused by Listeria monocytogenes strains.
