Enterobacter spp. Bacteria - the infections, susceptibility and resistance to antibiotics
Abstract: Enterobacter cloacae is frequently isolated from patients with hospital-acquired infections. As it is a part of the normal flora of the gastrointestinal tract, nosocomial infections are mostly endogenous.
Enterobacter spp. strains may be the cause of bacteriemia, infections of skin and soft tissues, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and other
organs.
E. cloacae has an intrinsic resistance to ampicillin and to first and second generation cephalosporins like cephalothin and cefoxitin, a mechanism mediated by the production of an inducible Bush group 1
b-lactamase AmpC. Resistance to extended spectrum cephalosporins, broad spectrum penicillins and aztreonam is due to mutation in chromosomal gene ampD. Once this mutation occurs, high levels of the chromosomal
b-lactamase (derepressed AmpC b-lactamase) are expressed. This phenotype commonly occurs under antibiotic treatment and Enterobacter isolates resistant to third generation cephalosporins account over 30% of the isolates from intensive care unit. Strains of
Enterobacter spp. are also able to produce plasmid-encoded cephalosporinases, classical TEM, SHV, OXA enzymes, differents types of ESBLs and carbapenem-hydrolizing enzymes: NmcA, IMI-1, IMP-8,
VIM-2. VIM-4 and VIM-5 b-lactamases.
