Abstract:
The best known hemolysin a
of Escherichia coli (HlyA) is the
prototype for a family of cytotoxins that are produced by a wide
variety of gram-negative pathogens. Hemolysin-producing E. coli
strains
are isolated from patients with extraintestinal infections such as
urinary tract infections or septicemia. The role of HlyA as a
virulence
factor of diarrheagenic E. coli was less
obvious until the
cell-detaching E. coli (CDEC) group, which
is HlyA-producing and is
responsible for diarrhea among infants, has been described. Apart from
of extracellular hemolysins, E. coli may
produce many cell-associated
hemolysins e.g. enterohemolysins, hemolysin b,
hemolysin of enterohemorrhagic E. coli
strains. The
ability of E. coli bacilli to
produce cell-bound hemolysins may indicate an important role
of contact
of bacteria with host cells during infection. However, the exact role
of these cell-bound hemolysins in pathogenicity of E. coli
remains to
be determined.
