Proteins as a nutritive substrate
for water microorganisms
Abstract:
This paper reviews the role of proteins in nutrition of heterotrophic
bacteria in aquatic ecosystems. It presents a classification of various
forms of proteinaceous matter present in the lake water and
analyses
their origin, concentration, and amino acid composition. Moreover, the
authors summarized the current knowledge on extracellular proteases in
aquatic environments, discussed the suitability of various methods for
exoprotease activity determination and described environmental factors
affecting enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins in situ.
Special attention
was paid to the biological availability of proteins and the role of
attached bacteria in the biodegradation of protein containing particles.
