Adenoviral infections in humans
Abstract: Human adenoviruses (HAdV) are a group of nonenveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses, which are endemic in the pediatric population. Adenoviruses cause a variety of infectious diseases in humans, such as respiratory disease, hemorrhagic cystitis, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, encephalopathy and gastroenteritis. Fifty-one different serotypes of HAdVs have been identified on the basis of neutralization with type specific animal antisera, and these serotypes can be classified into six subgroups (A to F) on the basis of their ability to agglutinate red blood cells. Adenoviruses are now also recognized as important pathogens causing severe morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients, especially in transplant recipients. The aim of this paper is the presentation of current knowledge about infections caused by human adenoviruses as well as commonly used diagnostic procedures.
