Characteristics of Citrobacter freundii strain with special focus on its ability to produce toxins
Abstract: The Citrobacter genus comprises a group of Gram-negative rods, which morphologically, biochemically and serologically resemble Salmonella spp. These bacteria are commonly present in the environment and are opportunistic bacteria that cause many infections.
Their characteristic feature is the lack of ability to ferment lactose or ferment this sugar after prolonged incubation. What is more, their antigenic structure resembles that of Salmonella spp. (O and H antigens) and some strains may possess Vi antigen, which is similar to Vi antigen of Salmonella rods.
Within Citrobacter genus, Citrobacter freundii is considered the most pathogenic species. This microorganism may produce many toxins: heat-stable (ST) and heat-labile (LT) enterotoxin, Shiga-like toxin (SLT-II) which are characteristic for enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains. These bacteria may also produce a toxin, which is homologous to the toxin produced by Vibrio cholerae strains (CT).
